Task lighting: start with the surface you need to see
A walkway, a machine label and the inside of a vessel are different visual tasks. Separating them makes it easier to choose between a hand lamp, an area light and a personal light without treating brightness as the only deciding factor.
Start at the work surface
Describe the surface rather than the room. A technician reading a recessed nameplate needs a different view from a crew moving materials through a long passage. The position of the worker, obstructions and reflective surfaces all change what reaches the eyes.
Consider the view from the working position. A light can make a space look bright while leaving the underside of equipment in shadow. Several useful viewpoints are more informative than a single photograph taken from the entrance.
- ↗Identify the detail being inspected.
- ↗Look for shadows caused by the work itself.
- ↗Separate movement lighting from close inspection.
Compare how the light will be carried or supported
A hand lamp can move with the inspection point. A supported work light frees the hands and can illuminate a broader working area. A headlamp follows the wearer but changes direction as the wearer looks away. These are different roles, and one site can use more than one of them.
Corded and battery-powered models introduce different operating routines. A corded product has an electrical supply and cable arrangement to consider; a battery product has a charging or battery-replacement routine. Compare the actual model options rather than assuming all portable lights operate alike.
- ↗Hand lamp: movable close-task view.
- ↗Supported work light: a fixed view of the task.
- ↗Personal light: illumination that follows the wearer.
Read the model after choosing the role
Use the product page to examine the specific voltage, cord, mounting and documentation options. Published family descriptions can span several configurations. A feature mentioned for a family is not automatically included on every selectable configuration.
For a classified area, match the selected model's approval to the documented location requirements. Where a measured lighting level is required, review the site layout and the manufacturer's photometric information together.
- 1.Open the chosen configuration.
- 2.Read its documentation and supplied accessories.
- 3.Use a site-specific lighting review where a measured lighting level is required.
Example: read the hand-lamp options together
The Tri-Cert hand-lamp listing includes separate cord-length and voltage option groups. Use the chosen combination when opening the product details; a family heading does not identify that combination on its own. A supported portable floodlight is a different format again, even when both products are being considered for inspection work. The useful comparison is the viewpoint and the documented configuration, not an assumption that the products are interchangeable.
