Hazardous-Location Protection Methods: A Selection Overview

Hazardous-location equipment uses several protection methods. Recognizing the terms helps a buyer read documentation, but a protection-method name alone does not establish suitability for a site.

Containment and energy limitation

North American explosionproof construction and Zone flameproof construction use enclosure-based protection within their respective approval systems. Their markings should not be treated as identical. Intrinsic safety limits electrical and thermal energy under defined assessed conditions; the protection level and complete approval determine where it can be used.

Other protection concepts

Encapsulation, increased safety and pressurization are other techniques used in specified equipment designs. They have their own construction and installation requirements. Do not combine components into a presumed safe system merely because each has an industrial enclosure.

Read the document's role

A standard states evaluation requirements; a certificate or listing identifies evaluated equipment and scope. ATEX, IECEx and North American certification have distinct roles. A laboratory's services or an educational guide do not prove certification of every product sold by WorkSite Lighting.

Bring the review back to the exact model

Match the complete ordering code, area classification, substances, temperature limits, ambient conditions and installation instructions. For a portable assembly, include the supply, transformer, cords and connectors. Keep unresolved model or documentation mismatches visible before use.

Compare approval systems for more detail on the documents a project may require.
